“What if you’ve been asking the wrong questions?”
That’s what the Holy Spirit asked me one morning before I started writing Build Different.
I was sitting with a long to-do list, multiple initiatives, and big vision.
I wasn’t burned out — but I was… full.
Too full to think clearly. Too full to pray slowly. Too full to ask deeply.
And here’s what I realized:
The wrong questions make you busy.
The right questions make you wise.
Are You Asking Flat or Formational Questions?
Here’s what I mean:
Flat Questions:
-
“How do we grow faster?”
-
“How do we raise more money?”
-
“What are others doing that we’re not?”
These aren’t bad — but they keep you in reaction mode.
They’re surface-level. Strategy-only.
And they assume something is broken without ever asking why you’re doing it in the first place.
Formational Questions:
-
“What’s the real problem we’re trying to solve — and is it ours to solve?”
-
“What would we still be doing if no one clapped, gave, or showed up?”
-
“What’s currently working… but shouldn’t be?”
-
“What have we been afraid to question because we’ve already built around it?”
-
“If we had to 10x the impact with no new resources — what would break first?”
These are the questions that form you as a leader — not just your programs.
They create alignment, clarity, and freedom.
Why Most Leaders Avoid These Questions
Because they slow you down.
Because they expose your pride, fears, assumptions.
Because they might lead to decisions that feel costly in the short term — but save you long-term pain.
But without them, you risk:
-
Building what looks good but isn’t sustainable
-
Growing faster than your integrity can carry
-
Staying loyal to models God never asked you to keep
Inside Build Different, I teach a framework I call Sacred Strategic Questions™
These are questions that hold both faith and framework — designed to help you discern the right next move.
Here’s a small sample:
Alignment Questions
-
“Where are we acting busy but not being effective?”
-
“What’s growing… but misaligned with our original mission?”
-
“Are we doing this because it’s fruitful — or just familiar?”
Capacity Questions
-
“If we stopped doing ___, would anyone notice (or care)?”
-
“What does our current structure not have capacity to hold?”
-
“Where are we leaking energy instead of gaining traction?”
Multiplication Questions
-
“What only I can do — and what must be delegated now?”
-
“What systems must be built to sustain the fruit we’re praying for?”
-
“If God sent 100 new people next week, what would break first?”
Worship-Centered Questions
-
“What are we building that we haven’t fully surrendered?”
-
“Where have we made success a condition for obedience?”
-
“Is this still about God’s glory — or my need to feel valuable?”
Remember: God Often Moves in Questions
“Where are you?” (Genesis 3)
“What is that in your hand?” (Exodus 4)
“Who do you say I am?” (Matthew 16)
“Do you want to be well?” (John 5)
God’s most powerful work in His people often began with a question.
Not a strategy. Not a step-by-step.
A question that pierced the heart and revealed the next right thing.
So why wouldn’t He still lead you the same way?
Final Challenge: Let God Question You
As you close out this series — and prepare for whatever season comes next — don’t rush back into building.
Sit in the tension of questions that don’t have quick answers.
And when the right ones come, write them down. Wrestle with them. Don’t outsource them.
Because the right question, asked at the right time, can change everything.
