”Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” (Ephesians 4:3, NIV)
Most of us want unity. Very few of us are ready for what it costs.
We picture it as a feeling. A warm room. Everyone getting along. No friction anywhere. So when the friction comes, and it always comes, we assume something has gone wrong. The relationship is broken. The person is impossible. Or maybe we are just not very good at this.
Ephesians 4 gently corrects us. Paul pleads with us to live worthy of our calling. Then he tells us exactly what that looks like: “completely humble and gentle, patient, bearing with one another in love” (v2). Read that last part slowly, friend. Bearing with. Not breezing past. Not pretending. Bearing with. The word itself tells you there will be something to bear.
That is the piece we keep missing. Unity does not arrive on its own. It is not the absence of effort. It is the fruit of it.
Look at how Paul describes the body of Christ growing up. It is “joined and held together by every supporting ligament,” and it grows “as each part does its work” (v16). A body is not one soft blur. It is many parts, each doing its own job, held together by the quiet tissue you never see. Ligaments are not glamorous. They just hold. And when each part does its part, the whole thing grows up in love.
So here is the honest truth about the people God has placed around you. Staying in unity with them will ask something of you. It will ask you to lay down the selfish thought before it becomes a selfish word. It will ask you to be patient on the day you feel worn thin. It will ask you to bear with the very person who is hardest to bear.
And on the days you feel easily frustrated, hear this gently. That frustration is not proof you have failed. It is the exact moment the invitation shows up. You do not have to squeeze patience out of your own tired supply. You get to turn to the One who is perfectly humble, perfectly gentle, perfectly patient, and pray the simplest prayer there is. Teach me Your ways.
Because that is the secret hiding in this whole passage. Unity is His work in us before it is ever ours. Paul does not say go make yourselves one. He says the Spirit already made you one, so keep it. Guard it. Do the daily work of holding on to what He gave you. The oneness is already true. Our part is to stop tearing at it.
Think of the relationship that costs you the most right now. The coworker. The sister. The person at church who lands on the other side of everything. What would change if you stopped waiting for unity to feel easy, and simply did your part today? One patient answer. One selfish thought laid down. One choice to bear with instead of walk away.
You will not do it perfectly. That is fine. Perfect was never the assignment. Faithful was. Do your small part, and let the Spirit do in you what you could never do on your own.
Unity was never going to be automatic. It was always going to be work. And in the hands of the God who holds every ligament together, it is work worth doing.
You were never meant to do the hard work of staying together all by yourself. Come find your people. We are a community of women learning to bear with one another, grow up in love, and let the Spirit hold what we cannot hold on our own. There is room for you exactly as you are.
